How to Help Your Baby Sleep Better at Night

As a new parent, you may wonder if you'll ever get a decent night's rest. This is a typical situation to deal with when you have a newborn. However, just because it's common doesn't mean there isn't anything you can do about it. There are many ways to help your baby sleep at night so that you can finally get the sleep you need.

Start a Routine

Even infants can start to understand what a routine is and what it leads to. When you are getting ready for bed start the night with a ritual to signal to baby it's time to sleep. This may be putting your baby's pajamas on and then reading a book to him. You can also simply rock him and sing him lullabies. Whatever you choose to do before you set your baby down for the night will help him realize that soon he will have to go to sleep.

Bath and Massage

Just as we like to be relaxed before we go to sleep, babies like the same. Before you place your baby down for the night, give him a relaxing bath or sponge bath. After the bath, massage him with some lavender lotion that will help him relax.

You'll notice how much more calm he will be after his nice warm bath and special attention from his mommy or daddy. When you put him to sleep, he'll be out like a light.

Sleep Leads to More Sleep

Many parents think the later they put their baby to bed the better he will sleep, since he is more tired. This is actually false and for babies, the more sleep they get, the more sleep they will do. So instead of putting your baby to bed late, try to move up his bed time and give him the naps he needs during the day. You'll soon see that instead of sleeping less at night, he'll start to sleep more.

Feed Baby before Bed

Babies get hungry at night, so make sure that he has a full tummy before bed. This will also induce sleep because as you know, a full stomach makes you sleepy.

You can also do night feedings. Before your baby wakes up at night, go in and feed him while he is sleeping. This will prevent him from getting into the habit of waking up to eat every night.

Be Calm and Turn Down the Lights

At night, you don't want to play with baby and excitement him. About an hour before bedtime, turn down the lights around you and be calm. This will help baby wind down for the day and get ready for a restful night's sleep.

Choosing the Best Night Time Solution
